Southeast Asian media collectively respond to the AFF Cup 2026 draw results

The AFF Cup 2026 draw results rapidly ignited Southeast Asian media, with top teams placed in opposing groups, leading to mixed responses from the area.

The AFF Cup 2026 group draw ceremony held in Jakarta quickly created a media "buzz" throughout Southeast Asia, as the official group layouts were confirmed, triggering a wave of varied reactions.

According to the draw, Vietnam is placed in Group A alongside Indonesia, Singapore, Cambodia, and the winner of the play-off between Brunei and Timor Leste. Meanwhile, Group B features Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Myanmar, and Laos.

Immediately after the draw, Thai media expressed considerable optimism. Khaosod newspaper observed that the Thai national team landed in a "relatively easy" Group B.

Specifically, Khaosod stated: “The Thailand national team faces a relatively manageable group in Group B of the ASEAN Cup, competing against the Philippines, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Laos.” This view was echoed by Siam Sport, which noted that the draw placed the "War Elephants" among opponents who are not overly challenging on their quest for the championship.

On the other hand, Thairath did not delve deeply into opponent analysis but emphasized Thailand football’s consistent goal for the tournament: “The Thai national team aims to reclaim its dominance in Southeast Asia,” highlighting their ambition to regain the top regional spot.

Conversely, Singaporean media appeared less optimistic. The Straits Times commented rather pointedly: “Singapore’s national team faces a tough group in AFF Cup 2026, having to meet the defending champions Vietnam right from the group stage,” implying a significant challenge for the "Lions" in their bid to advance.

In Indonesia, the press also showed special interest in Group A. Bola headline read: “Indonesia’s national team is grouped with the reigning AFF Cup champion, Vietnam.” The article emphasized Indonesia’s status as a third-seeded team and their upcoming matches against Vietnam, Cambodia, and the winner of the Brunei - Timor Leste play-off, forecasting a highly competitive group.

The AFF Cup 2026 is scheduled to take place from July 24 to August 26, 2026, immediately following the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup finals. Notably, this marks the first time in 30 years that the premier Southeast Asian tournament will be held during summer — a major change expected to bring fresh dynamics both in terms of competition and media appeal.
