Revealing the timeline for appointing MU’s new head coach after Amorim

MU is said to be avoiding hasty decisions regarding the head coach role after Amorim was let go.

Ruben Amorim's firing has been a shocking news in the football world over the past 24 hours. He became the sixth official MU manager to be dismissed after David Moyes, Louis Van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Solskjaer, and Erik Ten Hag.

Firing a coach mid-season is usually a reactive move, and clubs often lack a suitable replacement. MU’s case is similar, and INEOS is believed to want to avoid a rushed replacement that could disrupt the club’s long-term plans.

According to Givemesport, MU will have Darren Fletcher (U18 coach) lead the team until a suitable interim head coach is found. This interim coach will stay with MU until the end of the 2025/26 season. Only after this season will MU begin searching for a long-term manager.

The plan is for Fletcher to manage MU in two matches: Burnley in the Premier League and Brighton in the FA Cup, possibly even the game against Man City afterward. During this period, MU will look for an interim head coach for the club.

INEOS is reportedly considering MU legends for the interim head coach role, with candidates including Michael Carrick, Kieran McKenna, and most notably Ole Solskjaer.

According to the leadership, these legends have a strong connection with the club, understand its culture, and are willing to accept a temporary role during this trust crisis. The summer, especially after the 2026 World Cup, when the coaching market is more diverse, will be the time MU seeks a long-term manager.

MU’s top two targets this summer, according to David Ornstein, are Thomas Tuchel (England coach) and Roberto De Zerbi (Marseille coach).

Regarding contracts, while De Zerbi is still tied to a long-term deal with Marseille, Tuchel’s contract with England runs only until the end of the 2026 World Cup. The German coach has openly expressed his wish to continue with the Three Lions, especially after an impressive World Cup qualifying campaign: winning 8 out of 8 matches without conceding.

However, anything could happen if MU makes an approach. The Red Devils remain one of the world’s biggest clubs, with ambition and financial resources to elevate coaches. That is why, despite recent struggles, many managers are willing to join.

Both Tuchel and De Zerbi were on INEOS’s target list before appointing Amorim, and they continue to be the leading candidates for the Red Devils’ head coach role next season.

Besides these two, Xavi, Olivier Glasner, Enzo Maresca, and Gareth Southgate have also been linked to the long-term coaching position at MU for the upcoming season.
