Kylian Mbappe's inability to participate in the Spanish Super Cup semifinal, and doubtful recovery for the final, presents a serious obstacle for Real Madrid just before the derby.
Real Madrid entered the Spanish Super Cup aiming for their first trophy of the season, but their plans suffered a major blow regarding player availability. Ahead of the semifinal against Atletico Madrid, the coaching staff confirmed that Kylian Mbappe will definitely not play, despite some positive signs of recovery in recent days.
The French forward suffered a left knee sprain on New Year's Eve, an injury that had been lingering for weeks. After the holiday break, Mbappe's knee could no longer withstand the continuous playing intensity, forcing Real Madrid to make a cautious decision. Although the club initially left open the possibility of reassessing his condition before the tournament, in reality, Mbappe's participation in the derby semifinal is not feasible.
This marks another Madrid derby where Mbappe will be a spectator. Since joining Real Madrid in summer 2024, he has frequently missed key encounters due to fitness issues.
In the four derbies he has played, Mbappe scored two goals, both crucial equalizers in La Liga, highlighting his clear impact when fit. Therefore, his absence in Jeddah is seen as a significant loss for the Spanish giants.
Coach Xabi Alonso admitted he is not optimistic about Mbappe’s timely recovery. He emphasized that Real Madrid will not risk their most important star, especially considering their long-term goals remain La Liga and the Champions League. According to sources in Spain, even if Real Madrid advances past Atletico to the Super Cup final, Mbappe's return is still considered very unlikely.
Nonetheless, Mbappe still wants to travel with the team to Saudi Arabia to maintain team spirit and be ready to support his teammates in their quest for the trophy. Real Madrid also confirmed he will only return to play when fully fit, with no pressure during this sensitive period.
On the bright side, Real Madrid welcomes back Dean Huijsen after a thigh injury. The young center-back has fully trained with the squad and is ready for the semifinal. However, the list of absentees remains quite long as Eder Militao and Trent Alexander-Arnold are still unavailable, while Brahim Diaz is on international duty.
With Mbappe definitely sidelined, Xabi Alonso is likely to rely again on Gonzalo Garcia, who showed positive performances in the last match. Still, missing the striker who has scored 29 goals this season puts Real Madrid at a clear disadvantage entering the Super Cup derby, turning the encounter with Atletico Madrid into a real test for their ambition to win the 14th title in the tournament’s history.
