Alejandro Garnacho quickly showed a mocking gesture towards Ruben Amorim after the coach left Manchester United by liking a post on social media.
A post by journalist Fabrizio Romano announced Ruben Amorim was sacked by MU, accompanied by a photo of him with the word “SACKED” overlaid, which Garnacho liked. Amorim left Old Trafford amid tensions with the board and also had strained relations with some players.
Among them was Garnacho, whom Amorim bluntly told he had no future at MU from the start of the season. The Argentine winger also wanted to leave and later joined Chelsea for a fee of £40 million. However, it seems there is still bad blood between Garnacho and the former coach, as the player “liked” the post announcing Amorim’s dismissal.
Previously, Amorim reportedly told Garnacho that he would have to “pray” to find another club, during a reprimand in front of the whole team last summer. Afterwards, Garnacho was benched in the Europa League final where MU lost to Tottenham, only coming on in the 71st minute.
After the match, Garnacho expressed frustration: “Up until the final, I played every round to help the team, but today I only got 20 minutes. I just can’t understand it. The final will affect my decision, but so will the whole season and the club’s situation. I’ll try to enjoy the summer break and see what happens next.”
Since joining Chelsea, Garnacho has struggled to maintain consistent form. The club has also parted ways with coach Enzo Maresca. Liam Rosenior, currently managing Chelsea’s “sister” team Strasbourg in France, is the leading candidate for the head coach role at Stamford Bridge.
Meanwhile, Amorim had helped MU climb from the lower half of the table to the top 6 after a strong winter run. However, backstage issues are believed to be the main reason for his dismissal, especially after he publicly criticized his role at the club following a 1-1 draw with Leeds.
Amorim once stated: “I came here to be the head coach of Manchester United, not just a ‘coach’. That is very clear. I know I am not Tuchel, Mourinho, or Conte, but I am the head coach. That will remain the case for 18 months or until the board decides otherwise. I will not resign. I will work until someone else replaces me.”
MU confirmed Amorim’s departure with a brief statement: “Ruben Amorim has left his position as head coach of Manchester United. The club thanks Ruben for his contributions and wishes him all the best in the future. Darren Fletcher will take interim charge for the match against Burnley on January 8th..”
