Ruben Amorim leaves Manchester United with numerous stats showing he has the poorest performance in the club’s Premier League history.
Amorim was dismissed on Monday (January 5th), less than 24 hours after he publicly urged others within the club to “just do their job.” This decision ended the 14-month tenure of the Portuguese coach since he replaced Erik ten Hag.
According to ESPN, Ruben Amorim’s numbers at Man United are truly dismal. He only achieved an average of 1.23 points per game, the lowest among all MU managers in the Premier League era. The next lowest is Ralf Rangnick with 1.54 points per match.
Across all competitions, Amorim won only 38.1% of his matches (24 wins out of 63 games). This is the worst record of any Man United manager since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, except for Rangnick, who won 37.9% of his matches during his six-month interim period.
In the Premier League alone, Amorim won less than one-third of the matches he managed at MU: 15 wins, 19 losses, and 13 draws from 47 games. His longest winning streak was only 3 matches, achieved against Rangers (Europa League), Fulham (Premier League), and FCSB (Europa League) in January last year. The same streak was repeated in matches against Sunderland, Liverpool, and Brighton in October.
Overall, Amorim lost one-third of his games as Manchester United’s head coach, the worst statistic since Frank O’Farrell, who ended his tenure in 1972. During the Premier League era, only Ange Postecoglou has lost more matches than Amorim (21 compared to 19).
Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 after a glorious era with 26 trophies at Man United. Since then, the club has had six permanent managers: David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Erik ten Hag, and Ruben Amorim. Additionally, there were four interim managers: Ryan Giggs, Michael Carrick, Ralf Rangnick, and Ruud van Nistelrooy.
Darren Fletcher will lead Man United in the first match of the post-Amorim era, facing Burnley on January 8th, but it is unclear how long he will remain in charge.
Among the managers who succeeded Ferguson, Jose Mourinho holds the highest winning percentage (58.3%). He is also the most decorated manager since Sir Alex, having won the Europa League and League Cup double in the 2016–2017 season, along with the Community Shield.
Ten Hag won two cup trophies, Van Gaal secured the FA Cup, and Moyes earned a Community Shield. Now, Man United embarks on a journey to find the next figure capable of stepping out of Sir Alex Ferguson’s enormous shadow.
