Manchester United has officially relieved Coach Ruben Amorim of his duties after 14 months in charge of the team.
The Portuguese tactician was released by the “Red Devils” following a 1-1 draw against Leeds United on Sunday, a result that leaves Man United in 6th place in the Premier League standings. Coach Amorim departs the club after 14 turbulent months both on and off the pitch. He secured only 24 wins in 63 matches managing Man United, equating to a 38.71% win rate.
No Man United coach has had a worse record since Frank O’Farrell, who was dismissed in 1971. At that time, O’Farrell won just 30 out of 81 matches, a 37.04% win percentage.
After the mentioned match, Amorim made sharp remarks, openly criticizing his superiors during the post-match interview. According to multiple sources, this was seen as the “last straw” for Man United’s board, who had grown increasingly impatient with the coach over recent months.
In a fiery press conference following the Leeds draw, he hinted that he might be forced out earlier. He said: “I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not just the coach of Manchester United. That’s very clear. I know I’m not Tuchel, not Conte, nor Mourinho, but I am the manager of Manchester United. And it will be like that for 18 months, or until the board decides otherwise. That’s what I want to say. I want to put this matter to rest.”
He further emphasized: “I will not resign. I will do my job until someone else replaces me. I just want to say that I will be the manager of this club, not merely a coach. I have made that very clear. And everything will end after 18 months, then everyone will go their own way. That was the original agreement.”
“My job is not simply to be a coach. If people cannot tolerate the likes of Gary Neville or criticism from all sides, then the club needs to change. I just want to reiterate that I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not just a coach.”
Under-18 coach Darren Fletcher will temporarily take over as interim head coach. His first match in charge will be an away game at Burnley on January 8 (Vietnam time).
In the official statement, Manchester United said: “Ruben Amorim has left his position as Manchester United’s head coach. Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to the UEFA Europa League final in Bilbao this past May.”
“With Manchester United currently sitting 6th in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has been forced to make this change now to give the team the best chance to achieve the highest possible position in the competition.”
