MU speaks frankly to Amorim after dismissal

Manchester United has officially commented on parting ways with coach Ruben Amorim, ending a turbulent period despite some improvement in this season’s results.

Manchester United formally announced the sacking of Ruben Amorim through a brief but clear statement. On the club’s official website, they confirmed: “Ruben Amorim has left his position as head coach of Manchester United,” thus putting an end to all speculation regarding the future of the Portuguese manager following a series of unsatisfactory results.

According to the announcement, Amorim was appointed in November 2024 and had made an impact by “leading the team to the UEFA Europa League final in Bilbao last May.” However, the MU board emphasized that their current sixth place in the Premier League forced them to take action to maximize the season’s objectives.

Specifically, MU explained their decision with the statement: “Given Manchester United’s current standing in sixth place in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly concluded that this is the appropriate time to make a change.” The club believes that this “will give the team the best chance to achieve the highest possible league position.”

Although the announcement was diplomatically worded, behind the scenes Amorim endured a difficult period. Over 14 months in charge, he secured only 24 wins in 63 matches, a winning rate of 38.71% — one of the lowest in MU’s managerial history, even worse than Frank O’Farrell’s record.

Tensions escalated following controversial remarks by Amorim targeting the club’s leadership, especially after the draw with Leeds. The coach, born in 1985, was reportedly unhappy with his authority, the way titles were addressed, and the football director’s role in failed transfer deals.

Besides the results, statistics also worked against Amorim. MU went through a streak of 15 consecutive away games without a clean sheet — the worst defensive run in the club’s history. Closing the statement, MU expressed gratitude: “The club would like to thank Ruben for his contributions and wishes him all the best in the future,” while confirming Darren Fletcher will take temporary charge for the Burnley match.
