The 2-2 draw against Fulham not only cost Liverpool the chance to catch up with the top group but also left mixed feelings among the players on the pitch.
During a tough away match, Liverpool’s start was far from convincing. The Reds’ attack struggled against Fulham’s tight and physically intense style. Florian Wirtz, expected to be the main creative spark, had little space to showcase his skills. Nonetheless, the 22-year-old star managed to make a difference at a crucial moment.
Wirtz’s goal came after a determined run by Conor Bradley. The German midfielder finished neatly with his left foot, sending the ball into the net to his own surprise. In fact, Wirtz believed he was offside and hardly reacted with a celebration. “I was sure it was offside, so I didn’t even celebrate. I’m happy to score, but I wanted to get the three points more.” Wirtz told Sky Sports.
Despite scoring, Wirtz appeared dissatisfied with the final result. According to him, Liverpool need more than individual moments to win. He emphasized that the team must improve their pressing and intensity from the first half, rather than only showing bursts in the second half.
The reality on the field showed Liverpool underperforming in the first 45 minutes. They allowed Fulham to control the midfield and often struggled to build attacks. In the second half, the visitors increased their intensity, pressed more aggressively, and maintained more continuous attacks. This helped Liverpool create several dangerous chances and seemingly secure three points.
Cody Gakpo put Liverpool ahead during stoppage time, igniting celebrations in the away technical area. However, drama peaked when Harrison Reed unleashed a powerful shot in the 97th minute, leveling the score for Fulham. This late concession left Liverpool with a disappointing single point.
The 2-2 draw extended Liverpool’s unbeaten streak to nine games, but clearly, consecutive draws against Fulham and Leeds fell short of fans’ expectations. In the Premier League standings, The Reds remain fourth, yet the gap to third-placed Aston Villa has widened to eight points.
