Coach Arne Slot acknowledged Liverpool’s unfortunate loss of a win after Fulham equalized 2-2 in added time, even though the "Red Brigade" generated numerous opportunities and controlled the match.
Following the dramatic 2-2 draw against Fulham in the 20th round of the 2025/26 Premier League, Coach Arne Slot gave candid remarks to Sky Sports, admitting that Liverpool once again threw away a victory in a very unfortunate manner.
The Dutch manager began with a tone of regret: “In an away match, scoring two goals should have been enough to secure a win. But this isn’t the first time this season Liverpool fought hard, thought they had the victory, only to collapse after conceding a seemingly impossible shot.”
Slot emphasized that Fulham’s equalizing goal came from a short set-piece routine, while Liverpool had assigned Joe Gomez to defend set plays: “We missed out on a good result,” he added.
Analyzing the match further, Arne Slot believed Liverpool had every reason to claim all three points: “We had many chances in the first half. Some situations resembled the goal we conceded. Ideally, I want to see Liverpool both control the game and create even more opportunities. We scored twice, had two goals disallowed, and hit the crossbar, but still, that wasn’t enough.”
Aside from tactics, Liverpool’s coach also mentioned personnel issues. He confirmed the players gave their all, but the coaching staff had to manage to avoid overloading: “We have some injuries; Alexander Isak couldn’t play. Sometimes I had to increase the workload for certain players or use Hugo, who has never played in the Premier League before. That requires proper management, although there were still 11 very quality players on the field,” Slot shared.
Meanwhile, Liverpool’s goal scorer who put them ahead 2-1, Cody Gakpo, also showed his disappointment when speaking to the British press: “It’s really unfortunate. We fought hard in the second half and at times completely controlled the match. I scored in the 95th minute, but they equalized in the 97th with a beautiful goal. That was an unlucky moment.”
This draw keeps Liverpool in the top 4 with 34 points, but the gap with the teams above is widening. As for Fulham, the home side can be satisfied with their resilient spirit and brave performance, especially the long-range shot that decided the result in the final seconds.
